私は博士前期課程の時に、西オーストラリア大学 (UWA) で2ヶ月間の滞在研修の機会を得て、現地大学での研究や生活環境を体感し、後期課程進学後にジョイントディグリープログラムへ進学しました。UWAの位置するオーストラリア西海岸の都市パースは、自然と都市が融合した過ごしやすい環境であり、農業大国であることからも、UWAの研究環境はより現場に近くて充実しています。私はイネ根系形態の遺伝的制御に関する博士学位研究を行い、UWAでの1年間の滞在期間中、現地の指導教員が開発した根のフェノタイピング装置を用いた研究を行い、イネ品種の根系ストレス応答の多様性を明らかにしました。現在、国立研究機関の研究員として農学研究を続けていますが、研究者として学生という若い間に海外での研究経験を得られたメリットを強く感じています。ぜひ日本では得られない研究経験を求めて、一歩踏み出してみてはいかがでしょうか。
During my master's course, I had the opportunity to do a two-month research stay at the University of Western Australia (UWA), which led me to enroll to the joint PhD program. UWA is located in Perth, the state capital on the west coast of Australia, and has a pleasant environment, close to both city and nature. It also has a favorable agricultural research environment including research staff and facilities. I conducted my doctoral research on the genetic control of rice root morphology, and at UWA, I used a root phenotyping device developed by my local supervisors to clarify the diversity of root stress responses in rice varieties. I am currently continuing my agricultural research at a national research institute in Japan. I feel that the benefits of gaining research experience abroad while still a student are great as to be a researcher with multiple perspectives. Why not take the first step to seek experiences that you cannot get only in Japan?
修士2年の折、UWAに約1ヶ月間滞在し、素晴らしい環境と研究者の方々に魅力を感じ、是非とも博士課程の間にここで研究生活を送りたい、と強く願いました。そこから一念発起して英語の試験対策を始め、なんとか入学要件を満たすことができたときの喜びは今でも忘れられません。新型コロナウイルスのパンデミックもあり、想定していたよりは短い滞在期間となってしまいましたが、UWAでお世話になった同僚や先生方とは今でも連絡を取り合っており、つい先日も国際共著論文として成果を発表することができました。JDPに参加することで、通常の博士課程より修了要件が増えたり、コミュニケーションに苦労したり、困難も多くありましたが、それ以上に多様な考え方や研究への取り組み方に触れ、吸収することができたことは、大きな収穫でした。現在は大学で研究を続けていますが、海外の研究者と一緒に研究する機会があれば、今後も積極的に取り組みたいと思いますし、きっとJDPでの経験が生きると確信しています。最後に、本プログラムを設立し、一期生の私たちをサポートしてくださったスタッフのみなさんや指導教員の先生方のおかげで、両大学の共同学位を取得できたこと、心より感謝申し上げます。
During my second year of master's program, I stayed at UWA for about a month and was so impressed by the wonderful environment and researchers that I strongly wished to spend my doctoral program here. I will never forget the joy I felt when I managed to fulfill the entrance requirements. I am still in contact with my colleagues and professors who supervised me at UWA, and just recently we released new paper of my research at UWA as an international co-authored paper. To complete PhD in JDP, I had more requirement for the degree, and had some difficulties in communication, but more than that, I was able to experience and absorb diverse ideas and approaches to research, which was a great benefit to me. I am currently continuing my research at university, but if there is an opportunity to work with overseas researchers, I would like to be proactive and I believe that my experience in the JD will be useful. Finally, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the staff and faculty advisors who established this program and supported us as first-year students, enabling us to obtain joint degrees from both universities.
私は2022年3月に西オーストラリア大学とのJDPの1期生として博士後期課程を修了しました。長いようで短い大学院生という期間において、海外の自然豊かで歴史あるキャンパスで研究生活を送ることができたのは非常に貴重な経験であったと思います。入学準備段階から卒業まで両大学の関係者の皆さんにはとても温かくサポートしていただきました。また、博士取得後のキャリア形成にもJDPの経験が大きく役立っていますが、それはただ「留学をした」からではなく、留学を通して日本という国や自身の価値観をより俯瞰的にみることができ、留学前よりも明確なキャリアパスを描けるようになったからだと思います。
現在学生の皆さんには、交換留学やインターンシップ、語学学校へ通うなど海外経験を得るにあたって多くの選択肢があると思います。それらと比較してJDPの魅力は、なんといっても両大学の正規学生として講義を受けたり研究活動ができ、そして卒業時には共同学位を取得できることです。求められる入学・卒業要件は決して易しいものではありませんでしたが、全てをやり遂げたことで得られた自信や成長は何にも代えられない人生の財産となりました。また、世界で最も美しい街・パースでの友人やホストファミリーとの思い出は、卒業後に社会人として働く中でもいつも自分に寄り添い、悩んだり勇気が出ない時は背中をそっと押してくれるような存在であり続けています。
このような素晴らしいプログラムがある大学や研究科に所属しているだけで、皆さんの新しい世界への扉は既に半分開いているようなものです。そしてあと半分を開けるチャンスは意外と身近に落ちていたりしますが、それを取るかどうかを選択するのは皆さん次第です。恵まれた環境を味方につけ、迷った時こそ勇気を持って1歩を踏み出してみてください。心より応援しております。
In March 2022, I completed my doctoral studies as one of the first batch students of the JDP with The University of Western Australia. It was a very valuable experience for me to be able to spend my long but short time as a graduate student on an historical campus filled with the nature of Australia.
I am grateful for the support I received from everyone involved at both universities, from the preparatory stage of enrollment to graduation.
Also, my experience at JDP has been very helpful in shaping my career after obtaining the doctorate, though,
I believe that this is not only because I just studied abroad, but also because I was able to look at the country of Japan and my own values from a higher perspective, and to draw a clearer career path than before.
Currently, students have many options for gaining overseas experience, such as exchange programs, internships, and going to language schools abroad. The appeal of JDP compared to these options is that students can attend lectures and conduct research as a full-time student at both universities, and upon graduation, receive a joint Ph.D. degree. The requirements for admission and graduation were not easy, but the confidence and skills that I gained by doing all of these things was an irreplaceable asset in my life.
Additionally, the memories of my friends and host family in Perth, the most beautiful city in the world, will always be there for me even after graduation, and they will always be there to encourage me to move on.
Just by belonging to Nagoya University and the Graduate School of Bioagricultural Sciences that offers such a wonderful program, the door to a new world is already half open for you. The opportunity to open the other half may be closer at hand than you think, but it is up to you to decide whether or not you take it. Please take advantage of this privileged environment, and challenge yourself. I believe you will find your own experience in this program.
私の博士課程は，新型コロナウイルスのパンデミックと共に始まり，苦難の連続でした．想定よりもタイへの渡航・フィールド調査も遅れ，不安になってしまうこともありましたが，JDPの2人目の卒業生として，博士後期課程の修了、学位の取得をすることができ，心から嬉しく思います．これから私は他民族国家のマレーシアにて，日系バイオベンチャー企業に就職し，次のステージへと向かいます．今後の人生において，JDPで培った人的ネットワーク，異文化理解力，課題解決力は大いに役立つと確信しています．海外での研究に挑戦してみたくても一歩が踏み出せない方は，是非，勇気を出してJDPの扉を叩いてみてください．両大学の先生方，スタッフが温かいサポートをして下さります．

My Ph.D. program started with the pandemic of COVID-19, and it has many challenges. I was delayed in traveling to Thailand and conducting field research than I had expected. I sometimes felt anxious during my study, but now I am grateful to become a second graduate of JDP. As a next step, I will work for a Japanese biotech startup in Malaysia, a country with a multi-cultural society. I am confident that the international networking skills, cross-cultural understanding, and problem-solving skills I developed at JDP will be very useful in my future life. If you wish to try research overseas, I encourage you to knock on JDP's door. Professors and staff at both universities will provide warm support.

021年3月、名古屋大学・カセサート大学間のジョイントディグリープログラムの１期生として、博士後期課程の修了、学位の取得が叶いました。学部4年生で研究室に配属されてから、修士、博士と研究を続け、これまでの成果が実を結んだことを誇らしく、心から嬉しいと思っています。世界は今、誰も想像をしていなかった状況におかれ、まだまだ窮屈さを感じる生活が続くことが予想されます。難しい状況ではありますが、生命科学に携わる学生として、新たな研究の場へ踏み出し、多くの知識を吸収し続け、様々な発想や考えに触れ、研究に邁進できる環境や経験がこのジョイントディグリープログラムでの収穫だと私は思っています。ここから私は企業で研究職に就き、新たなステージへとまた一歩踏み出しますが、これまで培ってきたものを存分に活かして、さらに多くを学んで行きたいと思っています。
最後にこのプログラムに関わってくださった両校の先生方、スタッフのみなさん、そしてご指導いただいた指導教官の先生方に心より御礼申し上げます。
I just have completed the doctoral program and achieved the doctoral degree as the first student in the joint-degree program between Nagoya University and Kasetsart University. Since I was a 4th year undergraduate student, I have continued my research for 6 years, and I am proud and truly happy that the results so far have come to fruition. The world is now in a situation no one has imagined, and it is expected that our life will continue to feel cramped. Although it is a difficult situation, as a student involved in the field of life science, this joint-degree program provides environments and experiences that allows you to step into new research fields, continue to obtain a lot of knowledge, and come into contact with various ideas. I think these experiences are what I achieved through this program. From here, I will take a research job at a company and take another step to a new stage. I would like to make full use of what I have cultivated so far and continue my steps.
